Certificate for Garment Technicians - NVQ Level 4

The Garment Industry Management Institute (GIMI) is committed to equipping the apparel sector with highly skilled technical professionals who can bridge the gap between product development and bulk production. The Garment Technicians NVQ Level 4 Programme is designed to develop the practical competencies required to manage new style introductions, guide line feeding, provide technical support during bulk production, and ensure workplace quality, safety, and efficiency. With a strong focus on hands-on training, industry-relevant skills, and competency-based learning, this programme prepares participants to confidently take on the role of garment technicians who ensure “Right First Time, On-Time Delivery, and Quality” in today’s competitive apparel industry.

 

Programme Structure

1. Introduction to Apparel Industry & Garment Technician Role

· Overview of apparel value chain & role of garment technician

· Buyer expectations: RFT, OTD, Quality

· Workplace professionalism & ethics

 

2. Preparing for New Style

· Reading & analyzing Tech Pack

· Fabrics, trims & patterns inspection

· Capability samples & size set development

· Risk analysis meetings & style start-up

· Developing templates, measurement boards & finished boards Practical: Hands-on Tech Pack analysis, sample development

 

3. Line Feeding & Operator Re-skilling

· Operator skill matrix & re-skilling

· Scientific re-training (3G process / IE methods)

· Demonstrating standard operations

· Pilot run, first bulk validation, corrective actions

· Line feeding reports Practical: Mock line setup & re-skilling exercise

 

4. Technical Support for Bulk Production

· Troubleshooting production issues

· Cycle time monitoring & quality assurance

· Coordinating with IE & QC teams

· Additional re-skilling of operators Practical: Real-time production troubleshooting scenarios

 

5. Workplace Communication & Interpersonal Skills

· Verbal, non-verbal & written communication

· Defect & quality reporting methods

· Cultural & gender sensitivity Practical: Role plays, defect sheet & line report writing

 

6. Workplace Literacy & Numeracy

· Workplace English & technical terms

· Numeracy in apparel: SMV, efficiency, productivity

· Reading charts, tables & quality reports Practical: Garment-related calculations, SMV analysis

 

7. Teamwork & Leadership in Apparel Production

· Team goals & responsibilities

· Leadership & coaching skills

· Team meetings & group problem-solving Practical: Group case studies & leadership simulations

 

8. Occupational Health, Safety & Environment (OHS/E)

· Hazard identification & risk management

· PPE usage & safe machine handling

· Fire safety & emergency drills

· Waste management & cleaner production Practical: Hazard mapping, safety drill, first-aid demo

 

9. Review, Integration & Competency Assessment

· Integrated project (new style preparation → line feeding → bulk support)

· Mock NVQ assessment

· Final evaluation

 

Duration: 6 months

Delivery Mode:  Sundays, 9 am to 1.30 pm

 

Commencement: 23rd November 2025

 

Entry Requirement:

Pass GCE O/L with 6 months work experience  in the apparel industry 

Ideal for Production Staff, IE Staff, Supervisors, Quality Supervisors, Machine Operators

 

Payment Plan:

Registration Fee : Rs. 7,500

Course fee Rs. 12, 500 x 6 installments

A Social Security Contribution Levy (SSCL) of 2.5 % would be charged on all above fees. 

 

This qualification is registered with the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC).

In order to be awarded the NVQ certificate, students must successfully complete and pass the assessments administered by the NAITA
